A Sonar on Steroids
The Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing system allows speed-of-sound snapshots of huge areas of the ocean. How huge? The first figure shows data gathered from the system, as published in ”Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing (OAWRS) of marine ecosystems”Jagannathan et. al.
The first image is the oringal data showing a huge shoal of fish.
The second shows the sensor location, about 100 miles off of Long Island, NY.
But what if the shoal moved in on New York City? We can see that it would span the entire harbor of New York.
